Summary:

  • ePlane Company signs a $1 billion deal to supply 788 air ambulances.

  • The initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion in urban India.

  • Targeting commercial operations by 2026, with an initial production of 100 units per year.

  • The eVTOL aircraft will initially have a range of 110 kilometers, expandable to over 200 kilometers.

  • ePlane has raised $20 million and seeks an additional $100 million for further development.

ePlane's Groundbreaking Agreement

The ePlane Company, an innovative Indian electric aircraft startup, has announced a landmark deal to supply 788 air ambulances valued at over $1 billion. This initiative comes at a crucial time as India faces increasing traffic congestion in urban areas.

Transforming Emergency Services

Under a non-binding agreement, ePlane will provide electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to ICATT, an air ambulance service provider, aiming to deploy these lifesaving vehicles across all districts in India. The eVTOL technology is set to revolutionize urban travel, allowing for battery-powered aircraft that can take off and land vertically, thereby enabling commuters to bypass traffic.

Targets and Production Plans

With an eye on commercial operations by the second half of 2026, ePlane plans to produce 100 units annually. Satya Chakravarthy, the founder, emphasized the efficiency of ramping up air ambulance production compared to air taxis, stating, "We can ramp up our production and put things into the market to good use much more effectively with an air ambulance than directly going to an air taxi."

Aircraft Specifications

The initial range of these aircraft will be about 110 kilometers (68.4 miles), with future enhancements poised to extend this to over 200 kilometers. ePlane has successfully raised $20 million from investors and intends to start with three prototypes designed to accommodate a pilot, a paramedic, and a patient on a stretcher.

Future Funding and Development

To scale production and achieve type certification, an additional $100 million will be sought for further prototypes and commercial production, as highlighted by Chakravarthy, who is also a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, where the startup is incubated.
