The AI Boom

The impact of AI is being felt globally, with giants like Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG), Nvidia (NVDA), and Microsoft (MSFT) heavily investing in the technology. The global AI market is projected to reach $4.8 trillion by 2033, as per a UN Trade and Development report.

Record-Breaking Investments

In a landmark deal, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, secured $40 billion in funding, led by SoftBank, boosting its valuation to $300 billion. This was the largest VC-backed deal of 2025.

In Q1 2025, AI startups accounted for 57.9% of all venture capital funding, with 2,101 deals bringing in $73.1 billion. Despite this, the number of deals dropped to a five-year low, hinting at a potential cooling off.

Notable Startups

  • Anthropic, backed by Amazon (AMZN), raised $3.5 billion at a $61.5 billion valuation, with Lightspeed Venture Partners leading the round.
  • Infinite Reality, a newcomer, received a $3 billion investment, valuing the company at $12 billion.

VC Trends

While Q1 2025 saw 7,551 VC deals, the lowest in years, total investment hit $126.3 billion, the highest since 2022. Hoffman notes that VC firms are becoming more selective, focusing on established AI unicorns like OpenAI and Anthropic.
