  • AI agents are transforming industries by automating tasks like fraud detection and sales research

  • Without proper safeguards, connecting AI agents to the internet can lead to inappropriate outcomes

Companies across various sectors are increasingly deploying AI agents to automate a broad spectrum of tasks. In finance, these agents play a pivotal role in fraud detection by analyzing transaction data in real time. Sales teams leverage them to gather insights on potential clients, scouring the web and social media for valuable information.

For AI agents to be effective, they must access the internet securely, adhering to company policies and mimicking human research methodologies. Directly connecting an agent to a large language model like ChatGPT, without safeguards, can lead to inappropriate outcomes.

"Governance, risk, and compliance at the enterprise level are now more crucial than ever. Without them, it's just the wild, wild west," remarks George Mathew of Insight Partners. This concern prompted Insight Partners to lead a $20 million Series A investment in Tavily, a startup specializing in compliant web connectivity for AI agents. This funding round elevates Tavily's total capital to $25 million.

Founded by data scientist Rotem Weiss, Tavily originated from an open-source project, GPT Researcher, which gained rapid popularity with nearly 20,000 GitHub stars. Transitioning from a consumer-focused project, Tavily now caters to enterprise clients, offering tools for web search, crawling, and data extraction from both public and private sources.

Tavily's ambition is to connect the next billion AI agents to the web, positioning itself against competitors like Exa and Firecrawl, while OpenAI and Perplexity target independent developers with their search solutions.
