Denver-based business travel startup Engine, formerly known as Hotel Engine, has successfully closed a $140 million Series C funding round, achieving a remarkable $2.1 billion valuation. This significant increase of 62% from its previous valuation of $1.3 billion follows a $65 million Series B round in late 2021.

Resilience in Business Travel

The impressive valuation highlights the resurgence of business travel, a sector heavily impacted by the COVID pandemic. Despite many startups facing challenges in raising funds, Engine's success showcases a positive trend in the market.

Expanding Offerings

Engine's platform connects business travelers with over 750,000 hotels, 300 airlines, and 40 rental car companies. This allows travel providers to offer exclusive deals, manage reservations, and enhance marketing efforts. The company is currently profitable, boasting a 70% year-over-year revenue growth. The new capital will facilitate product development, including the introduction of flight and rental car bookings.

Rebranding for Growth

In a strategic move, Engine will rebrand itself to reflect its broader mission. According to CEO Elia Wallen, "Hotel bookings will always be in our DNA, but weā€™re out to transform the entire travel experience." With the support of Permira, the firm behind the latest investment, Engine is poised to realize its ambitious goals.

Record-Breaking Funding

This funding round marks the largest raised by a travel startup in 2023, surpassing the $106 million Series D of TravelPerk in January. Founded in 2015, Engine has raised a total of $221 million to date.
