Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic is taking a proactive step to address the economic consequences of rapidly advancing AI technology. Following CEO Dario Amodei's stark warnings about potential massive job losses and a spike in unemployment, the company is launching the Anthropic Economic Futures Program. This initiative aims to bolster research on AI's impacts and explore mitigation strategies for its downsides.

Amodei has been vocal about AI's risks, including its threat to humanity, and recently predicted that AI could eliminate 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs within five years. This forecast has stirred concerns, especially within the Trump administration, which is focused on fostering innovation to compete with China.

Sarah Heck, Anthropic’s head of policy programs and partnerships, emphasized the program's goal to encourage creative thinking and study AI's broad effects. Large tech companies like Google and Microsoft already report that about a quarter of their in-house code is AI-generated, leading to reduced hiring for software developers as productivity increases.

Anthropic's AI models are particularly popular among software developers and power AI coding startups such as Cursor and Replit. The Economic Futures Program will award 20 to 50 global research grants of up to $50,000 each, providing free access to Anthropic’s AI products to aid in analysis.

Key research areas include AI's impact on GDP, technology adoption rates, and labor market changes. Additionally, the program will create forums for researchers and policymakers to develop strategies for preparing for AI's widespread adoption. Anthropic plans to host conferences in Washington, DC, and Europe this fall to discuss these initiatives.
